How many Christians are taken up with something short of Christ! They are occupied with their holiness instead of with the Holy One; they are occupied with the promises instead of with the Promiser; they are occupied with the blessing instead of with the Blesser. And yet having Him we have everything.

The promises of God “in Him are yea, and in Him Amen.” His holiness is mine. His blessing is mine. The full occupation with a heavenly object will alone make us heavenly without an effort. We have not to try to be this or that: We “beholding … are changed” (II Corinthians 3:18).

We love to cover our central vacuum by some form of self-effort, and folks love it too, to give them a feeling of doing something to get where we can never get except by being!

To Know Him

To know Him, and the power of His rising again, and the fellowship of His sufferings, conforming to His death (Philippians 3:10).

The knowledge of Christ is especially extended to His sufferings and death, and to His resurrection. There is no reference whatever to His life and ministry in the land as a Servant of the Circumcision, which is knowing Christ after the flesh, which Paul repudiated (II Corinthians 5:16). Our vital connection with God’s Anointed does not commence until His crucifixion, and associates us with His resurrection and ascension.

The “Substitutionary” Death of Christ

The popular so-called Evangelical view of “substitution” is a gross mistake, and practically denies the union of Christ and His members, in His death, saying that He died that we should not die, and suffered that we should not suffer, etc.

“Substitution,” which is the so-called Evangelical or Puritan view, is that Christ, the Son of God, came into our place that we never should be in our place, which is simply nonsense and contradiction. Certainly He did not die that we should not die, as is so often and so falsely said; for ONLY “if we be dead with Him shall we live with Him.” He did not take our place that we should never take it, for it is our place.

Christ came into our nature, place and standing, joining Himself to us, to give us His life, and to bear our curse and burden for us and WITH us. In a word, we are delivered not from death but BY it, and OUT OF IT. Our salvation is not the saving or reinstating of the old man; but his condemnation through the death and resurrection of the Son of God, through our death and resurrection in Him and WITH Him.
